Archives

The Archives of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art

With 1,500 linear meters of documents preserved in just 400 square meters, the Archives are a valuable resource for in-depth research on the GNAMC collection.

They are organized into four main sections: the Historical Archive, the Photographic Archive, the Bio-iconographic Archive, and the Historical Fonds.
In total, around 51,453 archival units have been catalogued, enriched by 24,383 digital files available through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

Access to the Archives is free of charge and available by appointment only, for study and research purposes.

Historical Archive

Comprising 400 linear meters of files, this archive documents the administrative activities, acquisitions, donations, educational initiatives, and exhibitions that trace the history of the GNAMC and its premises.

Bio-iconographic Archive

Since the 1930s, this archive has collected newspaper articles, invitations, press releases, and exhibition photographs documenting the museum’s activities.
It also includes material related to the Rome Quadriennale, the Venice Biennale, and both private and public gallery activities, as well as a biographical section dedicated to artists.

Historical Fonds

Since 1973, this section has gathered 56 private archives from artists, critics, and galleries, amounting to about 700 linear meters.
It also includes the Archive of Applied Arts, acquired in 2012.

Photographic Archive

Divided into two sections:

  • one containing digital reproductions of artworks in the GNAMC collection

  • the other dedicated to historical photographs of artworks and temporary exhibition installations.
