The Self-Portrait project was conceived by the Educational Services of the Galleria Nazionale and developed in collaboration with SRTRe Ripa Grande (ASL Roma 1).
The term self-portrait refers to the representation of ourselves, but one that is not limited to the body or physical appearance: self-portraiture can also become a means of self-knowledge and profound psychological introspection.
In this project, the concept of “self-portrait” is therefore understood in a broad and cross-cutting sense. It is not simply a precise, almost photographic representation of oneself, but also the ability to recognise in every work of art a part of ourselves that may be hidden, elusive or unfathomable. Through drawing and experimentation with different techniques and materials, participants will learn to observe and interpret works of art, identifying the emotions they convey.
The works in the Galleria Nazionale collection will thus be explored from this dual perspective, both cognitive and emotional. The question is not “What is the work?”, but rather “What does the work mean to you?” and “What emotions does it evoke in you?”
With the support of cultural mediators from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, participants will be encouraged to enter into dialogue with the works of art, gradually developing a deeper awareness. This may lead either to a greater sense of distance from the artist and their creation, or to a process of identification with the work itself, which can ultimately become our own self-portrait.
