Ritratti di donne da Van Gogh a Modigliani e oltre (SHE. Portraits of Women from Van Gogh to Modigliani and Beyond), the second chapter in the collaboration between the Municipality of Parma and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. Produced by the two institutions in collaboration with Solares Fondazione delle Arti, with the support of Fondazione Cariparma and the Emilia-Romagna Region, the exhibition is curated by Renata Cristina Mazzantini and Cesare Biasini Selvaggi and will remain open until 8 March 2027.

More than 60 works displayed across 13 rooms trace over two centuries of history through paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and tapestries drawn exclusively from the GNAMC collections. The exhibition presents a remarkable array of real and imagined female figures, exploring the aesthetic, psychological, cultural and political transformations that accompanied the emergence of modernity.

From Vincent van Gogh’s Madame Ginoux to Giovanni Boldini’s Marchesa Casati, from Amedeo Modigliani’s Hanka Zborowska to Antonio Mancini’s Carminella, and Pablo Picasso’s Nu Debout (Standing Nude), a recent acquisition donated by the Cy Twombly Foundation, the women at the heart of the exhibition embody a range of distinct identities, personalities and destinies. Alongside exceptional loans of works by Gustav Klimt, Alberto Giacometti, Man Ray, Medardo Rosso and Kees van Dongen, this multifaceted vision of femininity includes numerous portraits by women artists who investigate female subjects and interpret their complexity, among them Antonietta Raphaël Mafai, Dora Maar, Francesca Woodman, Vanessa Beecroft and Marinella Senatore. The exhibition is therefore about portraiture, but also about the gaze: the gaze of artists upon women, and that of women upon themselves and other women. Throughout the exhibition, art history becomes a history of self-determination and the reclamation of the body, contributing to the shaping of a new female identity.

One section of the exhibition is devoted to artistic developments in Italy between the two World Wars. During this complex period of transition, the female figure assumed an increasingly autonomous and assertive presence on the artistic scene. The portraits testify to the diversity of the period’s artistic experiences, from Metaphysical painting to Magic Realism and Novecento Italiano, while also revealing the gradual dismantling of female stereotypes imposed by the culture and propaganda of the Fascist regime. It is precisely in the gap between public image and inner life that a form of quiet resistance emerges: women often appear motionless but not passive, withdrawn yet by no means devoid of agency. Their faces and bodies thus open up a space of autonomy that challenges rigid conventional models.

Presenting the exhibition in 2026 also carries particular significance in light of the eightieth anniversary of women’s suffrage in Italy. While it is difficult to trace a straightforward history of emancipation, the exhibition uses the works on display to gauge the changing ways in which women have been observed, imagined and represented. “In Parma, the GNAMC is presenting an extraordinary selection of female portraits, including several masterpieces, to mark the eightieth anniversary of women’s suffrage,” says Renata Cristina Mazzantini. “This further demonstrates our concrete commitment to the Museo migrante (Travelling Museum) project, conceived specifically to broaden knowledge of the collection in Italy and abroad. The exhibition also provides an opportunity to refine and update scholarship on the collection, not least in light of several important new acquisitions recently made in preparation for the exhibition, in keeping with a dynamic vision of cultural heritage that seeks continually to enrich it.”

SHE.
