The Languages of Her Time

10 February 2026 – 3 May 2026

The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea presents the exhibition Bice Lazzari. The Languages of Her Time from 10 February to 3 May 2026, a major retrospective featuring significant works by the artist (Venice, 1900 – Rome, 1981), who spanned the entire twentieth century, leaving a profound and unmistakable mark through her unique, solitary and authentic artistic language. Organised according to a chronological and thematic approach first developed for the exhibition’s opening presentation in Milan at Grande Brera, the Rome exhibition has been considerably expanded, with the addition of more than eighty works.

Curated by Renato Miracco in collaboration with the Bice Lazzari Archive in Rome, the exhibition brings together more than 200 works spanning the artist’s entire career: from applied arts of the 1930s and 1940s to the architectural construction of veritable pictorial narratives, from Spatialism to Informal art and material abstraction, through to minimalist works created using simple rods. For the first time, the work that Palma Bucarelli selected for her personal collection will also be exhibited. The mezzanine section, curated by Mariastella Margozzi and devoted to the field of applied arts, presents approximately 100 sketches and artefacts created by the artist for the design of cushions, jewellery, wall decorations and textiles—including works for Giò Ponti—as well as decorative interventions in public and private spaces. Two spectacular tapestries designed for the Raffaello ocean liner will also be on display. Completing the exhibition, a large mural painting measuring approximately four metres will provide further evidence of Bice Lazzari’s artistic research. The drawings, whose graphic compositions transcend Art Nouveau and Art Deco decoration, testify to a turning point in the conception of contemporary design.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Allemandi, featuring contributions by Dorothy Kosinsky and Christine Macel, members of the exhibition’s scientific committee, as well as audioguides recorded by the curator. These offer a scholarly yet intimate reading of the exhibition project, enriched by excerpts from the artist’s autobiography.

Supported by Gucci, main sponsor, with the contribution of PwC and MAG as technical sponsor, the exhibition brings together works from Italian and international institutions and collections, including Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art, Venice; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.

Bice Lazzari.
