The work depicts a kind of Byzantine royal procession, a promenade—hence the title of the project, Promenade—through a magical garden of interrupted paths: a zone of free semantic exchange in which signals and visual rebuses of all kinds (optical, illusionistic and ornamental elements, human faces and self-portraits of the artist himself) seem to form a fragmented mosaic and point towards a path that in fact leads nowhere.

The installation is completed by Metempsychosis, Circle Song Seven (2023), measuring 2 × 2 metres, which, at the end of the exhibition, will be donated to the Italian State and become part of the permanent collection of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea.

Almost as if recreating a kind of visual shock, characteristic of Maurizio Cannavacciuolo’s iconographies and non-linear juxtapositions, the black-and-white paintings are counterpointed by four brightly coloured glazed ceramic vases entitled Be very happy! (2022). Just over one metre high, they were made by Davide Servadei at Ceramica Gatti in Faenza.

The underlying idea of Promenade is to hyperstimulate the optical and articulated space of Maurizio Cannavacciuolo’s rich iconographies, which function as true visual metaphors for the contemporary world and are painted according to superimposed schemes designed with extreme precision and elegance.

The work Metempsychosis, Circle Song Seven enriches the Gallery’s collection with a vibrant pictorial expression representing the ironic and surreal microcosm of an artist who transforms the graphic mark into a global visual language, condensing the pervasive consumerism of postmodern iconography into a monochromatic two-dimensional form.

Biographical Notes

Maurizio Cannavacciuolo (born in Naples in 1954, lives and works in Rome) abandoned his studies in architecture in the mid-1970s and began his artistic career with the prestigious Galleria Lucio Amelio in Naples.
