Museums are not merely custodians of beauty; they can also become genuine spaces of inclusion, listening and care. The Galleria Nazionale d\u2019Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome demonstrated this on 20 May 2026, when it hosted the concluding event of \u201cVenti Laterali\u201d (Crosswinds), a series of creative writing workshops developed as part of the ART4MIND project. This valuable initiative further strengthens the profound connection between culture and health, in full alignment with the recent memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the entire project is ART4MIND, an innovative platform created through a scientific and social partnership between Policlinico Gemelli and Unhate Foundation. This remarkable collaboration brings together the hospital\u2019s medical excellence and the Foundation\u2019s commitment to combating hatred and violence through the power of dialogue and sharing. Together, the two organisations have joined forces to place art at the service of medicine, making a tangible contribution to the emotional and psychological well-being of young psychiatric patients. A distinctive feature of this scientific programme is the active involvement of young people in creative activities that are continuously monitored from a clinical perspective, with the ambitious aim of developing a rigorous therapeutic model that can also be replicated in other healthcare settings.<\/p>\n

The vision of Unhate Foundation finds one of its fullest expressions in this project: the ability to transform inner fractures and social wounds into new opportunities for renewal. At a time when mental health difficulties among young people are still all too often surrounded by prejudice, the partnership with Policlinico Gemelli demonstrates how stigma can be challenged by combining medical care with artistic expression, supporting not only patients\u2019 mental well-being but also their relationships with the world around them.<\/p>\n

It is within this context that the event hosted by GNAMC took place, marking the final stage of the \u201cVenti Laterali\u201d creative writing workshop, conceived and developed by two leading organisations in the field of storytelling, Scuola Holden and Feltrinelli Education. The programme consisted of four thematic sessions inspired by four symbolic winds, each capable of guiding and transforming personal experience: Memory\u2013Ponente, Gaze\u2013Levante, Body\u2013Tramontana and Encounter\u2013Ostro. During each session, lasting approximately two hours, the young participants were guided through sensory exercises, inspirational readings and writing activities. Those who wished to do so were then free to share their texts with the group. Drawing on the principles of narrative medicine, the participants found a safe space in which to give voice to their experiences and process their emotions through the written word. This wealth of stories and reflections will not be lost, but will soon take the form of a digital publication intended for public outreach.<\/p>\n

The event at GNAMC marked the completion of one strand of a broader programme consisting of weekly sessions for groups of between 15 and 30 participants. Following the successful conclusion of the Poetry and Creative Writing workshops, the platform developed by Policlinico Gemelli and Unhate Foundation is now preparing to explore new forms of expression with the forthcoming Photography workshop, focusing on the visual expression of emotions.<\/p>\n

The experience developed within the galleries of GNAMC demonstrates how cultural institutions can open themselves to their communities and become powerful drivers of social inclusion. The project\u2019s future prospects are already looking further ahead, towards extending this model to other healthcare settings and developing prevention and mental health awareness initiatives for young people to be delivered directly in schools.<\/p>\n
