Of these, eleven are by Cy Twombly, to whom a room will soon be dedicated, and one is by Pablo Picasso, “Nu Debout,” a pastel on paper from 1906.

In addition to the works, the agreement, signed on June 11, 2025 by Renata Cristina Mazzantini, Director of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Nicola Del Roscio, President of the Cy Twombly Foundation, also provides for a cash donation totaling approximately $3 million to the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art from the Foundation, to renovate the conservation laboratory and establish a master’s degree program and scholarships that will be named after the American painter.

The artist is known for his artworks, which convey cultural, historical, and poetic references – particularly to classical antiquity – through abstract forms and marks. Born Edwin Parker Twombly, Jr. on April 25, 1928, in Lexington, Virginia, he first studied with Pierre Daura and Marion Junkin at Washington and Lee University and later trained at the Art Students League of New York and Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where he formed lasting ties with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham. From 1957, the artist settled in Rome, where in 1958 he held his first solo exhibition in Italy at Plinio De Martiis’s Galleria La Tartaruga. During the same years, he also produced several important works, including “Olympia,” “Arcadia,” “Blue Room,” and “Sunset” (1957).

Created in Rome between 1957 and 1963, the Cy Twombly works that will enrich the Italian State’s public art collection are of exceptional historical and artistic interest. Among them is one of his masterpieces, “Untitled” (1959–1961), a large-scale work (197.5 × 234.8 cm) executed in pencil, oil paint, and wax crayons on canvas.

As for the cash donation, $1,475,000 will be allocated to the renovation and modernization of the conservation laboratory at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, including the purchase of new machinery, furnishings, materials, and equipment, as well as improvements to its security. The agreement includes a commitment to keep the laboratory open, active, and fully operational, and it will be named after Cy Twombly, except for any periods required for routine or extraordinary maintenance.

A further donation of $1,475,000 will be used to establish, manage, and organize, for fifteen years and through an agreement with a leading third-party educational institution, an annual specialized master’s degree program in the conservation and restoration of works of art on paper, recognized by the Ministry of Education and Merit, at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. The program will be named after the artist and will also provide scholarships and organize an annual event dedicated to the master’s program. This initiative will enable GNAMC to become an innovative research center for the conservation of contemporary works of art on paper.

Further details will be announced during a press conference to be held after the summer at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Image: Cy Twombly, Untitled, 1957 – © Cy Twombly Foundation
National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome.
